Oliver Goulet helped launch Sugar Nest Extracts on a simple principle: “We won’t put out a product that we won’t smoke ourselves.”
Co-founded by Nestor Barrera, Eric Oostenbrug and Goulet, Sugar Nest came to life in Michigan’s adult-use market about two years ago.
Goulet had dropped out of college in 2018 to join the cannabis industry as a caregiver, helping a friend of his mother’s overcome cancer.
“Fast forward eight years later, here we are,” he says.
With a focus on cultivation in his early years, Goulet scaled his business like so many in medical, starting with a small tent, then working his way up to a garage and eventually a large greenhouse. In recent years, he shifted his focus toward extraction and scaling the Sugar Nest brand without compromising quality. Sugar Nest — still a small company, but one that is rapidly gaining respect for quality, consistency and transparency — specializes in hydrocarbon extractions and making cured resins and live resins. The team has grown from three employees, when the co-founders handled all the processing, packaging and sales, to seven employees — though Goulet continues to spend a great deal of time on sales because he prefers the face-to-face interaction of meeting with retail buyers and industry leaders.
“We’ve basically poured everything we had in this thing,” Goulet says of his team. “We’re here for the long haul and our name means everything to us.”
In addition to his work as a cannabis professional, Goulet is an outspoken man of faith.
“For the longest time I was torn whether or not this was the right vocation for me to be in,” Goulet says. “But I’d love to see more people talk more about their faith in this industry.”
