I feel like I should write today because I’m cautiously optimistic and that seems to only happen once in a blue moon.
I just got back from spring break, where I’ve never been so stressed about trying to relax. I felt like “NOW. Right now is your time to relax. And … GO.” I probably looked like a constipated cat trying to really focus and get done what needed to get done (in my case relaxing) and failing miserably. I worked from 4-9 a.m. every morning and then had family time the rest of the day.
My idea of relaxing is very different from my kids and husband. My kids want me to throw them around in the pool. My husband wants to go on an adventure. I want to nap. And read. And nap some more. (By the way, I did not get to nap once.) In fact, I’m not sure I actually let go and relaxed at all, but the family had fun and that’s what is important, right?
We returned to find Trail Blazin’ still standing and no one quit or was fired. WINNING! It kind of felt like maybe we should go on vacation more often.
Departments are falling into place. Job descriptions are being written in detail. I addressed my inbox management issues on the trip, which was 90 full days of unaddressed emails, so my current to-do list is specific and attainable (still four pages long, but I’ve come to terms with the fact that it’s never going to get any shorter). Slowly but surely, I’m checking things off my list.
Then I had a surprise inspection from Labor and Industries this morning. That’s always fun.
Then I had a surprise inspection from the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board this afternoon. That’s even more fun.
For the first time in six months, the bookkeeper’s report doesn’t cause me to go into a full anxiety attack.
And now I’m headed to San Francisco to participate in the National American Planning Association Conference. I’m super excited as this is not a cannabis conference at all, but rather a break-out session for government planners, corporate planners and elected officials to hear about the lessons they can learn as cannabis continues to be legalized throughout the world.
While I’ve done a lot of public speaking about cannabis, this is the largest conference I’ll have participated in that is not cannabis specific. The whole goal is to normalize cannabis, right? Well, speaking at functions like this is part of that and the fact that they are openly inviting us and giving us premier speaking spots speaks volumes!
Baby steps and incremental wins. Feel the moment. Calm has set in … time to enjoy it while it lasts.
