Cannabis in Northern California
Marijuana Venture’s ongoing series on every legal market in the United States explores the ever-changing rules and regulations, market trends, demographics, business leaders and more for each state that has legalized recreational marijuana. Most issues focus on a single state market, but California, the largest and most renowned cannabis market in the world, demands a little more attention. This month looks at Northern California, while next month Marijuana Venture will address Southern California.
In many ways, the modern cannabis industry was born in Northern California. Always ahead of the curve, San Francisco voters in November 1991 approved Proposition P by 79%, calling upon state lawmakers to allow cannabis to be used for medical purposes. That led to a City Council resolution in 1992 that allowed doctors to recommend the use of medical marijuana, made cultivation and possession of medical marijuana among the lowest priorities for the police and district attorney, and allowed cannabis sales to AIDS patients and others, essentially creating the country’s first regulated cannabis market. The same framework was later used in 1996 to pass Proposition 215, which legalized medical cannabis throughout the Golden State. Twenty years later, California passed Proposition 64, legalizing cannabis for recreational use.
Today, Northern California is still considered by many as the best region for outdoor cannabis production in the world and home to a booming commercial industry.
