Amazing Retail Designs
Retailers across North America are upping their game, enlisting A-list design firms from inside and outside the cannabis industry to stand out and to keep customers coming back for years to come.
While some of the following stores reside in well-established markets and set the bar high for competitors, others operate in newer markets and act as ambassadors for the entire industry.
Marijuana Venture spoke with the leading designers behind many of these retail stores to get insight on the design decisions and why they work in their respective markets.
Superette
Toronto, Ontario
Although it’s only 690 square feet, the pint-sized Superette cannabis shop in Toronto’s Trinity Bellwoods Park makes quite an impression. The store was designed to be a pick-up-and-go experience for visitors of the historic, 38-acre park. The walk-up location forgoes traditional menus to offer a cafeteria-style shopping experience where customers pick up a tray and select from a curated array of pre-rolls and infused beverages that are meant to be consumed inside the park.
The inspiration for Superette’s grab-n-go retail concept, or “sip-and-smoke” as the company calls it, was from traditional East Coast bodegas and European outdoor kiosks, commonly known as Trinkhalle. The tiny location’s booming color palette and checkerboard-tile floor pay homage to the longstanding corner stores that are hubs of local shopping and often help give urban East Coast neighborhoods their distinct feel. In addition to cannabis products, the store also stocks other park necessities such as blankets, bottle openers, portable speakers and tote bags.
Superette was also clever to incorporate its “munchie phone” at the location, which directly dials another fixture of the Bellwoods neighborhood, Lambo’s Deli & Grocery, for sandwiches and salads to fill their picnic baskets.
