In recent years, the cannabis industry has experienced remarkable growth and legalization across various regions. As the market continues to expand, so does the need for sustainable practices within the industry. One crucial aspect that demands attention is packaging. Sustainable packaging not only promotes environmental responsibility but also aligns with the values of eco-conscious consumers. In this column, we will explore five emerging sustainable packaging trends in the cannabis sector, highlighting the industry’s commitment to eco-friendly practices.
1. Embracing Recyclable and Biodegradable Materials
One of the primary focuses in sustainable packaging for cannabis is the use of recyclable and biodegradable materials. Traditional plastic containers are being replaced by alternatives such as glass, cardboard, and compostable plastics. Glass jars, for instance, are not only reusable but also preserve the product’s freshness and quality. Similarly, paperboard/corrugated boxes made from recycled materials are gaining popularity for their recyclability and reduced carbon footprint.
New research from PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, and the AMERIPEN (American Institute for Packaging and the Environment) indicate that while companies are currently reliant on plastic packaging, the tide is changing toward these more sustainable solutions.
The 2023 PACKAGING COMPASS: Evaluating Trends in U.S. Packaging Design Over the Next Decade and Implications for the Future of a Circular Packaging System, a new study and accompanying infographic, identifies key trends in packaging design and materials and the implications of these trends on legislation and the recovery systems for consumer-packaged goods (CPG) companies.
Respondents to this comprehensive survey indicate that 75% of (CPG) companies continue to use plastic, more than those who use paper, and significantly more than those who use metal or glass. But when asked about shifts in packaging materials usage over the next 10 years, the report indicates that marijuana manufacturers, as well as other CPG companies, are increasingly looking to sustainable materials such as compostable, certified SBS paperboard, certified Kraft paperboard, bio-based bioplastics, and post-consumer recycled content (PCR).
2. Minimalist Design and Efficient Use of Materials
The concept of “less is more” is gaining traction in the cannabis industry’s packaging design. Brands are adopting minimalist packaging styles, reducing the overall amount of material used while maintaining product safety and regulatory compliance. Streamlined designs not only appeal to environmentally conscious consumers but also save on production costs and transportation resources.
3. Child-Resistant, Yet Sustainable
Safety is a crucial consideration in cannabis packaging, especially when it comes to child resistance. However, the industry is finding innovative ways to incorporate sustainable materials into child-resistant packaging solutions. Companies are exploring plant-based plastics, compostable films, and other eco-friendly alternatives to ensure product safety while minimizing environmental impact.
4. Innovative Solutions β Pouches and Reusable Containers
To address concerns regarding excessive packaging waste, cannabis companies are introducing innovative solutions. Pouches made from renewable resources, such as hemp or other plant-based materials, are gaining popularity. These pouches are lightweight, durable, and offer customizable printing options, making them an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic containers. Additionally, reusable containers are being introduced, encouraging customers to return and refill their products, reducing single-use waste.
5. Labels and Inks: Eco-Friendly Choices
Sustainable packaging goes beyond the materials used; it also encompasses eco-friendly labeling. Brands are increasingly opting for recyclable and biodegradable label materials, as well as vegetable-based inks for printing. These choices reduce environmental impact during the production and disposal of packaging, further enhancing the overall sustainability of the product.
The cannabis industry is undergoing a transformative shift toward sustainable packaging practices. From embracing recyclable and biodegradable materials to adopting minimalist designs and innovative solutions, companies are actively prioritizing environmental responsibility. Based on materials changes proposed by the CPG community, the PACKAGING COMPASS forecasts growth in lightweight materials like flexible film pouches and food wrappers that are not yet widely recoverable. Compostables are forecast to see a significant increase, although like flexible films, they currently lack a significant recovery system to ensure they are composted after use. Lastly, recycled content in packaging is expected to grow with many CPG firms identifying plans to increase PCR content in existing packaging.
These sustainable packaging trends not only reduce waste and carbon emissions but also resonate with eco-conscious consumers who seek eco-friendly options. As the cannabis market continues to grow, industry stakeholders must prioritize sustainable packaging practices and work toward a greener future. By doing so, they can demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship and play a vital role in shaping a sustainable cannabis industry for generations to come.
To prepare for this shift to more sustainable packaging, cannabis manufacturers will find the latest sustainable solutions on display at PACK EXPO Las Vegas (Sept. 11β13, 2023; Las Vegas Convention Center). The new Sustainability Central and accompanying Sustainability Stage at the show will serve as an interactive destination offering an expansive look into what sustainability means and will provide actionable sustainable solutions in manufacturing, materials, and design.
Sustainability Central will highlight the current state of six key areas of packaging sustainability and will ask βwhat ifβ questions encouraging attendees to think about how these areas influence their own work. The exhibit will focus on meeting attendees where they are, stating the facts, and ultimately being a resource for those who are looking to learn more about making their brands more sustainable.
The six key areas include:
- Design β Using minimal materials and renewable resources
- -Materials β Application, labels, mono materials, downcycling
- -Manufacturing β Design for inclusivity of all steps
- -Recovery β Downcycling, design for sustainable alternatives, eliminate problematic packaging (magnets, films, etc.)
- -Logistics β Right-sized package, master cartons, weight considerations, modularity
- -Data β Data driving design decisions.
At the accompanying Sustainability Stage, attendees will hear from experts on a range of packaging sustainability topics and learn to make brands more sustainable in the future.
In addition, the PACK EXPO Green Program returns to PACK EXPO Las Vegas and is the commitment of PACK EXPO and its partners, vendors, and exhibitors to work together to create a more sustainable world. PACK EXPO Green identifies exhibiting companies that provide sustainable solutions via new materials, technology, or strategies such as sustainable processes and machines, renewable and biodegradable packaging, source reduction and lightweighting, recyclable and recycling-content materials, or innovations that reduce carbon footprint. Look for companies participating in the PACK EXPO Green Program to advance sustainability goals. In addition, look for the green icon to highlight education sessions focused on sustainability.
In keeping pace with industry growth and the growing emphasis on sustainability by cannabis manufacturers, this yearβs show will be the most comprehensive packaging and processing show in North America in 2023. On track to be the largest and broadest edition of this trade show since its inception, PACK EXPO Las Vegas will showcase solutions from over 2,000 suppliers. From engaging with colleagues and hearing from industry experts to witnessing materials, technologies, and machinery in action, attending PACK EXPO Las Vegas is the most effective way to explore packaging and processing solutions for every kind of product, entire production lines, and even the supply chain.
