When Matha Figaro discovered a knack for making cannabis-infused edibles, combining her classical training in culinary arts with a desire to help a friend through chemotherapy, she realized cannabis represented more than just a business opportunity.
“Helping people through food, which just happens to have THC in it, is my calling,” she says.
Figaro formed ButACake as a business in 2016 and recently brought the legacy brand fully into the light with distribution in Delaware and New Jersey. In addition to its botanical elixirs, dissolving strips and other baked goods, ButACake will be the first company to have its infused brownies approved for New Jersey’s adult-use market, with an expected launch date of April 16.
“I have a hospitality background of being a pastry chef, so baked goods and sweets are definitely my jam,” Figaro says. “But being innovative and a consumer myself, every time I eat food, I think about how can this get me high?”
