Though still small compared to flower and even vape pens, the edibles segment grew to nearly 12.1% of the cannabis market in September 2022, reaching nearly $1.6 billion in sales across the markets tracked by Headset, according to a new report from the data analytics company.
Overall, the edibles category accounts for 11.8% of sales from January through September 2022.
And while the pot brownie may be the first thing some people still think of, gummies dominate the modern edibles scene, accounting for a staggering 73.9% of the edibles market, compared to less than 1% for the traditional brownie. The “caramels, chews and taffy” category comes in second at 9.5% with chocolates close behind at 9.4% for third. Mints follow at 2.2% with “candy, lozenge and gum” at 2.1% and cookies at 1.3%.
In the U.S., while millennials make up the largest single share of edibles purchasers — with men more likely to buy than women — consumers over age 41 make up 51.3% of edibles sales, despite being only 37% of the total cannabis market.
Among the states, Colorado has the highest percentage of sales going to edibles at 14.8%, followed by Massachusetts, Michigan and Illinois with Arizona and Washington having the lowest sales percentage at 9.6% and 9.1%, respectively.
Additional findings show that the average individual price for an edible has decreased 8.7% since the beginning of 2022 to about $13.86 per item.
