Cannabis in Southern California
Marijuana Venture’s ongoing series on every legal market in the United States explores the ever-changing rules and regulations, market trends, demographics, business leaders and more for each state that has legalized recreational marijuana. Most issues focus on a single state market, but California, the largest and most renowned cannabis market in the world, demands a little more attention. This month is the second half of our Golden State coverage, looking specifically at Southern California.
Southern California has played a large part in shaping the modern cannabis industry. Los Angeles, the largest city in the world that allows adult-use cannabis, was home to both the beginning and the end of cannabis prohibition, starting with the 1914 raids on Mexican-American neighborhoods, to the passage of Proposition 215. Its early history of injustice bred advocates who dared to challenge the system. That passion, passed from generation to generation, remains a vital part of the state’s industry today. The region remains a leader in the industry, from its radical social equity program to opening the first adult-use cannabis consumption lounge, the Lowell Cannabis Café in West Hollywood.
In addition to advocacy, Southern California is, in many ways, the touchstone for modern cannabis culture. Its influence can be felt through decades of Hollywood films and at the heart of its ever-vibrant creative community of writers, musician, poets and artists.
Next month, Marijuana Venture will look at Nevada (June), followed by Massachusetts (July) and other states in future months. For information about upcoming issues or to learn about advertising and sponsorship opportunities, email Editor@ MarijuanaVenture.com.
