40 Under 40
For the past five years, the Marijuana Venture staff has compiled an annual list of some of the brightest young leaders and influencers in the cannabis industry. As in past years, we have narrowed the list from hundreds of worthy candidates to present 40 individuals from the vast and ever-changing business in the United States and Canada.
It is our honor to share their stories.
Tyler Rumi
Age: 34
Company: Good Buds
Title: Co-Founder and CEO
Alex Rumi
Age: 32
Company: Good Buds
Title: Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer
At a time when most licensed producers in Canada were courting multimillion-dollar investments and riding a wave of public offerings to fund their budding enterprises, Tyler Rumi was living in his van on his company’s land, overseeing the details of his family farm to make sure everything was done right.
It’s an origin story far different than the million-square-foot indoor grows that have watched shareholder value disintegrate over the past year, and one that speaks volumes about the passion of Tyler, the Good Buds CEO, and his brother, Alex, who believe there’s a huge opportunity for craft producers in Canada’s still-growing recreational market.
“From the beginning,” Tyler says, “our decisions have been based on what our customers want. … We don’t sell anything we wouldn’t want as a customer.”
“A lot of groups were initially focused on the investor community, given the early enthusiasm around the space,” says Alex, the company’s chief strategy officer. “Now that products are on the shelves, I think we’re seeing a sharp realignment of priorities.”
Located on British Columbia’s Salt Spring Island, Good Buds received the first outdoor cannabis cultivation license in the country in 2019 and has been awarded transitional organic status (eligible for full organic certification in August).
“With the island’s mild climates, we’re lucky to have longer seasons and grow beside the ocean, which gives our outdoor buds a unique, greasy quality from the salty breezes,” Tyler says.
