Dear 2013 Danielle,
If you’re reading this then time travel has finally come to fruition. With any luck, you’ve received this via the DeLorean. Regardless of how you’re receiving this message, here are a few tidbits of advice I would recommend in an effort to make your life as easy as possible as you embark on this cannabis journey:
- Obtain three times the amount of money you think you need. You will need it sooner or later.
- Get your city council and government officials on speed dial.
- Heed the advice of experienced business people; they have been there and done this. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel!
- Don’t get your LLC agreement from the Internet.
- Assume the lowest sales price and the highest overhead, no matter how sure you are that it’ll be the exact opposite.
- Take a deep, intimate look at the character of people you’re doing business with.
- Sleep and eat as much as you can right now. There will be no time to do either soon.
- Don’t underestimate the height of the mountain that is the federally illegal cannabis industry.
- Listen to your gut. Always.
- Start two companies. One to execute all the requirements of the licensed cannabis protocol. The other to do EVERYTHING else.
- Don’t hire friends.
- Go for high margin and low overhead.
- Think big picture. Everything you do should be with the idea of going global in mind.
- Always remember why you’re doing this.
- And finally, never forget: “You have no problems, only solutions.” Now go get ‘em, girl!
With love, 2016 Danielle.
