Pre-rolls are the second largest product category in Canadaβs cannabis market and are primed to overtake cannabis flower, according to a new white paper from Custom Cones USA and data from the analytics firm Headset.
The white paper shows that revenue for the pre-roll category increased by 54% during 2022. The increase in sales was shown across every province in Canada, with Saskatchewan seeing 33% growth, Alberta reporting 37% growth, British Columbia seeing nearly 54% growth and Ontario seeing a staggering 69% increase in pre-roll sales.
Overall, the Headset report shows pre-roll sales surging by more than 50% in the past 18 months. The categoryβs market share has grown from 20.7% at the beginning of 2022 to 31.5% in May 2023. Meanwhile, the report shows consumer preference for flower is waning; the category has declined from a little more than 45% market share to slightly more than 35% during the same period of time. This trend leads Headset to believe the category will shortly become the most popular form of cannabis product in the country.
The white paper also details that pre-roll products accounted for 27% of new items introduced into the Canadian market during 2022. In total there were 1,870 new pre-roll products introduced into the market during 2022, a growth rate of 48.2% compared to 2021.
